PreS-Gr 3–This is a delightful story about a grumpy anthropomorphic bunny at the beach, bemoaning all of the horrors of said beach. This includes looking at other characters smiling and laughing and simply stating “bad” or “yuck” about the water and its residents. Giving a sense of the tone, the reaction to a beautiful sandcastle is that anyone can make one. The greatest indignity comes when the bespectacled nameless bunny gets bonked on the head by a ball. Another bunny comes to apologize, and what follows is a sweet ending that brings the story together beautifully. The text is large and the font is clear, making it an excellent choice for readers who are eager to test out their new skills; the illustrations complement the story with bright colors that create a beach mood.
VERDICT Picture books seldom get more entertaining than this, turning very spare material into a friendship saga. Recommended.
