Baby-PreS–This photographic board book ­depicts children and adults with various shades of brown skin taking part in celebratory activities together. From picking flowers to cooking in the kitchen, Juneteenth is shown as a time of hugs, stories, and togetherness, whether celebrated with a cookout, at a parade, or at home. A note to adults explains the history of the Juneteenth holiday, and discussion prompts for babies through early elementary are included. This is a great tool for caregivers to share the importance of this holiday in an age-relevant way. Following in the style of the “We Are Little Feminists” board books, this uses photographs of real individuals in their communities.
VERDICT Children and families will enjoy seeing themselves depicted in this book. A worthy addition to most board book collections.
