PreS-Gr 1— After wistfully observing snow geese flying north for the summer, city-dwelling raccoon Leon tags along with his fox friend Gaspard and Gaspard's mother (a pilot) to an unnamed spot in the Arctic to deliver supplies to a village school. Their plane runs into trouble and they land on what appears to be an ice floe. Luckily, various friendly Arctic animals help them on their way and they arrive in the village in time to witness the snow geese arriving at their summer home. Papineau's text stretches the facts about the Arctic landscape—it is at once dark enough for the Northern Lights to be visible and close enough to spring that geese are migrating and flowers are blooming. Doyle's digital illustrations are flat and cartoonish and occasionally do not support (or match) the text. Some images appear to have been copied and pasted multiple times over the spread.
VERDICT Readers interested in Arctic wildlife or tales of friendship, travel and adventure will find better examples elsewhere. A supplemental purchase.
