K-Gr 2–In a heaven populated by angels of Bravery, Comfort, Healing, and more, Little Angel is at a loss. Though he feels deep in his heart that he has a purpose, he does not know what good deed or miracle he can bring to humankind. After trying unsuccessfully to emulate some of the guiding angels, he determines that the swelling song in his heart is meant to relieve the sadness of the forgotten. He explains, “I bring light and warmth to places that have been cold and dark for far too long.” He is a Christmas Angel! Whimsical paintings on spruce wood provide visual interest to a pedestrian story plainly told. The angels’ appearances charmingly defy readers’ expectations—they are not halo’d and white-robed, but in uniforms that match their vocation. Translated from German, the book retains its European flavor through its formal speech and illustrations that evoke the feeling of an Alpine village. The angels are depicted with a variety of skin tones and body types.
VERDICT A secular successor to Charles Tazewell’s The Littlest Angel, this is an additional purchase.
