PreS-Gr 2—Little Banty Chicken has a grand dream of one day throwing a beautiful summer evening celebration for her farmer family, but she also thinks that because she is just one little chicken her dreams are too insignificant to make a difference. She does, however, have the courage to share her idea with her friend the moon, who encourages her to reach out to others as well. Once she does, the other animals come to embrace her vision and help to make it a reality. This story reads a bit like a classic folktale with rich full-page watercolor illustrations that lend themselves to that folksy feel. The story concludes with two simple exercises for children to expand their own thoughts on the concepts of friendship and dreams.
VERDICT While this is not an essential purchase, the story's inspirational tone and quiet message of self-actualization make this an enjoyable discussion starter.
