Gr 1-4–This tongue-in-cheek picture book about a boy’s annoyance with books will make young readers chuckle out loud. A young boy dedicates the pages of this clever book to show readers why books are such a bother, and what he plans to do about them. Not only are books boring, but they also hurt your vision, cause papercuts, and are full of ideas! The young protagonist has many ideas on what to do to make books useless: Create books with illustrations having nothing to do with the text, fill libraries and bookshops with sad and awful books, create stories with no ending, and much more. Each page is full of creative ways the protagonist plans to do away with reading, even as he uses writing and books to do so. Blank space is left on pages and readers are encouraged to use that space as they wish, making this an interactive book that some libraries might want to stay away from. Illustrations are colorful, and the Spanish text is humorous and often enlarged or bold and full of expression. The protagonist, while often bemoaning reading, makes this book a humorous and entertaining read that children will reach for again. Big blocks of text make this also a good choice for older readers.
VERDICT This picture book, with its humorous protagonist and fun take on books and reading, is a fun addition to Spanish collections for children. It can be used as writing prompts or as part of the school curriculum.
