Gr 1-4–A story from the late 1960s from Caldecott winner Hyman gets its Spanish translation 50 years after publication. A little girl has just found out for the first time that there is such as thing called Christmas, an old wise woman told her so, but she didn’t include a single detail. This unnamed girl goes on a quest through the forest, accompanied by a gradually bigger group of animals, to see if she can find this mysterious thing called Christmas. Each addition to the party focuses on a different aspect from the object of their search: what will it feel like? What will it taste like? What will it smell like? And so on. This gentle story takes readers through the frozen woods of Finland, with distinctive art that only has a few gray and red hues. The Spanish translation will help readers broaden their vocabularies when it comes to sensory perception. The small trim size and extended text make this more appropiate for elementary readers.
VERDICT A good purchase for libraries serving Spanish-speaking communities or with bilingual programs, especially around the holiday.
