PreS-Gr 2–Many children are familiar with Maisy, the lovable white mouse. Here, she prepares for all the festivities surrounding the Chinese New Year. She cleans and decorates her house, purchases special food, buys a red dress (because red is lucky), has a meal with her friends, watches fireworks, participates in a parade, receives a gift, and more. The illustrations are typically bold and bright and will help children visualize unfamiliar aspects of the holiday. The text is simple enough for primary children to understand but it does not shy away from big words that may need a little explanation the first time.
VERDICT An excellent picture book to introduce children a common holiday and useful to include in any collection in support of celebrations.
