Gr 2-5–Continuing the theme of mental and emotional health in a fun, accessible way for young readers,
ADHD Emotion Explosion centers on Marvin and Lyssa, two classmates working together on a science “Scare Fair” project. Marvin has great ideas—but his great ideas
also have great ideas, which leads to impromptu games of garbageball and ponderings of brain mucus instead of working on their rocket project. When Marvin wrecks their rocket in a fit of recklessness, Lyssa can’t control her anger and explodes. Marvin, familiar with the techniques of ST4 (Stop: Take Time To Think), shares the procedures with Lyssa, and introduces another technique for focusing attention: making a “monstercam” rectangle with his hands to focus on the object at present. Can Marvin and Lyssa pull it together and salvage their science project in time for the Scare Fair?
VERDICT A compelling addition to a neglected niche in children’s literature, Monster Diaries addresses difficult emotional health topics with common sense approaches.
