K-Gr 2—The quirky cow from Millie Waits for the Mail (2007) and Millie in the Snow (2008, both Walker) displays her flair for hide-and-seek in this title. With pigs submerged in tubs and peering out of tractors, chickens stretched out on gutters, and goats under the henhouse, where can Millie hide? The very last place you'd expect, of course-and we'd all like to know just how she climbed that tree in the first place. The next question is how will she get down? Steffensmeier turns a mildly funny story into a feast of hilarity with his pictures of puzzled-but-never-panicked barnyard animals in surprising situations. As in his earlier books, the chickens steal the show, knitting wool scarves, toting the tea things, wearing funny hats, and playing cards in trees. Be sure to watch for the baby chicks making a carousel out of the gramophone. The latest Millie book will make an entertaining addition to any library and provide an outrageously unrealistic lesson on farm life and rescue teams.—Susan Weitz, formerly at Spencer-Van Etten School District, Spencer, NY
