K-Gr 2–A cheery class of seafaring, airborne, and land creatures celebrates the 100th day of school with a fun project designed to entertain and educate the reader. Led by their teacher Miss Mingo (a pink flamingo!), student animals share ways in which they count to, or calculate to reach, the number 100. Centipede does 100 jumping jacks while Octopus separates seashells into 10 piles with 10 shells in each one. With every method of counting shared is a fun fact about that animal. For example, when the temperature drops below 70 degrees, alligators submerge themselves under water and breathe through their snouts. After all the projects have been completed, Miss Mingo asks students to create something using 100 paper cups and make a silly face for 100 seconds. The author’s whimsical artistry of the various animals is fun and friendly, and the pastel colors throughout the book give the characters and their classroom a cheerful look and feel.
VERDICT A lovely book as a read-aloud or for independent enjoyment. Libraries in schools where the 100th day of school is celebrated, especially in the primary grades, should consider this purchase.
