Gr 9 Up–A fender bender with grouchy senior Everett has launched eleventh grader Corie Nielson toward competing for a spot on Vampyr Vick’s evening horror show. Irritable Everett wouldn’t have turned her head, except for the prop blood and teeth in his car. But Everett is also devilishly funny and just as immersed in horror. He has his own dream involving his prodigious special effects skills, and a little teamwork could earn them a contest win and help kick-start their careers. But how can that happen with personalities that clash so intensely? And something is holding Corie back from success in all areas of life: Try as she might, she just can’t seem to get it together, and sometimes the results have terrible consequences. Rom-com fans will delight in the hilarious dialogue between explosively enthusiastic Corie and gloweringly brusque Everett. Relatable character struggles, including Corie’s journey toward a diagnosis of ADHD, will appeal. Corie and Everett’s knowledge and love of horror proves to be an added bonus for those interested in the genre. Corie is white with red hair; the main characters are straight, with LGBTQIA+ representation in others.
VERDICT Rom-com fans will root for these two to win it all, and just give in to the chemistry. A good addition for libraries with readers who enjoy wickedly funny, realistic romance.
