PreS-Gr 1—In this read-alike for Penny Dale's Dinosaur Zoom, former police officer Crowley chronicles a case tackled by the intrepid Officer Panda. There are mysterious packages, confetti on a runway, and even a balloon that he must chase down in his helicopter, all while readers and the officer wonder what the clues will add up to (surprise! It's Panda's birthday). The brightly colored mixed-media cartoons are mediocre, but they are complemented by endpapers showing a cartoon version of a helicopter with its parts labeled, which is a plus in a book for young readers.
VERDICT Not an essential purchase, but the surprise birthday party element makes the book a good follow-up to Dinosaur Zoom, and the police activity creates a winner for children who like the TV show PAW Patrol.
