K-Gr 3–Pancho conejo and his siblings and mamá eagerly await the homecoming of papá conejo, who left Mexico for the United States in search of work after drought made working and earning a living difficult. When papá conejo, señor gallo, and señor borrego fail to return from the north, the families wait and wait. At night, Pancho conejo decides he must look for his papá, and he packs up papá conejo’s favorite foods and begins to travel north. When Pancho conejo comes across a coyote, the coyote offers to help him make the journey if Pancho gives him some of the food he is carrying. As they travel, Pancho gives more of the food until he has none left. When the coyote turns on Pancho and attempts to eat him, papá conejo and his friends arrive in time to save him. They return home with Pancho conejo as their guide, with the family hoping it rains so that papá conejo will not have to leave once more. Tonatiuh’s Pre-Columbian inspired art is beautifully hand drawn and then finalized digitally, presenting stirring emotions, such as love, fear, and hope. The acclaimed Pancho Rabbit and the Coyote has been translated beautifully, showing readers the perils of a journey to the U.S., as well as reasons families choose to make the journey. A glossary and web links are included; an author’s note goes into further detail about coyotes, and the journeys and obstacles immigrants face.
VERDICT Excellently illustrated and written, this Spanish-language picture book makes the topic of immigration accessible for young readers.
