PreS-Gr 2–Derived from a Disney cartoon for preschoolers, the plot is a boilerplate superhero story, this time with children as the featured characters. Three seemingly average kids are gathered for a birthday party when they discover that Greg’s lizard cake has been stolen by their nemesis, Night Ninja. Greg and his friends, Connor and Amaya, quickly transform into their PJ Mask personas, Gekko, Catboy, and Owlette, and pursue the villain. Hopping in their Gekko-mobile, they head out to look for Night Ninja and find him holding the cake. This book might serve as a tool to steer young children from TV to books, but the plot is wandering and predictable. Neither the writing nor the illustrations are strong enough to recommend.
VERDICT Collections whose patrons clamor for licensed and familiar characters will want to put their purchasing dollars elsewhere.
