Raj Plays Soccer

PreS-Gr 1–The publisher adds several new titles to its “We Can Readers” collection, including these four featuring Raj. Each book runs from seven to 11 pages long and uses simple sentences, repetitive language, and visual cues to support beginning readers’ earliest efforts. In Raj Gets a Puppy, “Raj gets food. Raj gets water. Raj cleans up poop.” The other titles in this series are similar in style, listing the animals Raj pets, the things he cleans up in his room, and the things he does when he plays soccer: kick, block, shoot, and score. Three prompts at the end of each book invite students to complete a sentence, draw a picture, and discuss personal connections to the story with their classmates. The digital artwork is simple, but colorful and engaging; it leaves a lot of white space that allows for easy focus. Raj has brown skin and dark hair.
