Gr 9 Up–A wonderful story about school, sports, religion, and acceptance. Ramin Abbas is a high schooler at a private Muslim school in Canada, hoping to get a full ride to NYU. He follows all the traditional Muslim practices, like fasting and praying, but he also struggles with what he has been taught about haram—he is supposed to believe that listening to pop music and being gay are forbidden. How can Allah punish Ramin if that’s the way Allah made him? Ramin is forced onto the soccer team, because he doesn’t have enough physical education credits. If he doesn’t have all his credits, he can’t graduate on time and get his full ride to the college of his dreams. However, one of his new teammates knows his secret and is blackmailing him to throw the championship game. A game that will secure a full ride to another university for a different teammate. The prose flows like a friend calling on FaceTime. Ramin is funny, relatable, and filled with pop culture knowledge. This is a story that will show people they aren’t alone. There is strong language throughout.
VERDICT An excellent addition to any library. This would be a great recommendation for readers looking for LGBTQIA+ books, stories about friendship, books about sports, and realistic fiction.
