PreS-Gr 2– A seahorse’s life from small-fry to fatherhood is told in a text that reads like a story but is full of facts and new vocabulary. The dreamy digitally created illustrations take readers underwater to the small creatures’ habitat. These fascinating fish come to life and even seem to have a bit of personality in this lovely book. A short glossary of terms is included, as is an author’s note detailing the destruction of seahorse habitat and the damage that overfishing has done to this diminishing species. Find a spot for this one.–Heather Acerro, Rochester Public Library, MN
This elegant picture book chronicles the life of a male sea horse, touching on growth, mating, "pregnancy" (male sea horses carry eggs), and birthing process. Though informative, the text is rife with lyrical language (e.g., of the mating ritual: "he waltzes around her to music only they can hear"). Soft-edged digital illustrations draw the reader into a dreamlike underwater world. Websites. Glos.
