Gr 9 Up–At school, Makoto dresses as a girl, but at home and everywhere else, he feels pressured to live his life as a boy. Despite the hardships this creates, Makoto enjoys being able to live an authentic life in at least one sphere. One day, a schoolmate on Makoto’s committee confesses her crush, and Makoto has to let her down easy. Rather than be disappointed, Saki expresses that she appreciates both sides of Makoto and is determined to prove herself worthy. To complicate things further is Ryuji, Makoto’s protective childhood best friend who thinks Saki has ulterior motives. This sweet school romance provides inspiration for readers to explore their own selves and live authentic lives, and perhaps to pursue their crushes even if a lack of courage may be a current hindrance. There are a lot of supportive characters and uplifting messages throughout this first volume, and charming illustrations match the overall tone of the story.
