Gr 8 Up—Smith's alternative history novel, a follow-up to Sekret (Roaring Brook, 2014), continues its breakneck plot speed after Yulia and her family flee communist Russia for the relative safety of the United States. The KGB's stronghold over the use of Yulia's physic powers may be lessened now, but her family comes under the suspicion of the U.S. Government and the CIA. Yulia must gain control over her abilities in order to save her family and herself. The author's elegant, occasionally poetic prose serves as a refreshing contrast to the unrelentingly swift plot. Although at times Yulia's decisions may frustrate, ultimately the ending concludes satisfactorily.—Amanda C. Buschmann, Atascocita Middle School, Humble, TX
This better-focused 1960s-era sequel to Sekret continues the part historical, part science fiction conceit. Yulia's escape from Communist Russia to the U.S. isn't the safe haven she imagined from the KGB's psychic espionage program. The action-filled plot is led by the heroine's resolve to gain control of her own mind in order to save both her family and new country from the Soviet Union.
