Gr 8 Up–It all starts with two British teenagers: Imogen, a white, bisexual, would-be stand-up comedian, and Ollie, an openly gay football captain. When Imogen’s autism exacerbates the sensory overload of her first Pride parade, she flees, wishing for a Pride event accessible to everyone. To that end, she establishes a school activist club, first recruiting Ollie. Ollie, whose white father just left his Japanese mother, reluctantly bows to Imogen’s overwhelming enthusiasm. Head girl Amelia Valadez then volunteers herself, bringing boyfriend Josh; best friend Maryam, who wears a hijab; Louisa, a Black girl who uses a wheelchair; and Louisa’s nonbinary partner, Clem. They are ready to take on the world—but is the world ready to accept them? For anyone who loves witty banter, unforgettable characters, and vocal LGBTQIA+ pride, this is a delight. Imogen is hilarious, dramatic, brash, thoughtful, prone to guilt spirals, and determined. Responsible and sensitive Ollie is furious with his father, protective of his mother and little sister, and in desperate need of this unexpected new friend. Imogen and Ollie’s budding best friend, chosen family relationship will warm readers’ hearts. In addition, the activist group’s activities, including believable struggles with the school administration over establishing a gender-neutral bathroom, will inspire readers yearning for change in their own worlds. Regular use of profanity reflects characters’ ages and speech patterns.
