Gr 6 Up-Valentina "Val" Baker is the miraculous sole survivor of a mission to save Earth from an incoming asteroid. Though the planet was spared, falling rubble decimated the population. A year later, Earth is recovering but Val is still struggling with not only survivor's guilt (including hallucinations of her dead teammates) but also amazing new powers as a "human plasma fusion reactor." As Val uses her abilities and instincts to protect herself and others from a corporate conspiracy, readers get some answers but are also left eagerly waiting for the next installment. Just like the rest of still-new "Catalyst Prime" superhero universe, inclusive representation is worked seamlessly into the narrative. The book features an array of identities, and the comic showcases a strong queer female lead. The art is impressive, and the characters and panel layout are easy to follow, even as times and locations change frequently.
VERDICT A fun read for superhero fans looking for something new.-Tammy Ivins, University of North Carolina at Wilmington
