PreS-Gr 1—A child understands that though she never met her grandfather, he is still a part of her. Soft-edged illustrations in pastel colors introduce readers to Ela, a cute little girl with pink cheeks and brown hair. Ela is surrounded by a loving family from whom she learns many things. Her grandmother taught her to draw a fish; her grandfather taught her to pull his moustache; her aunt taught her to play peek-a-boo; and two cousins taught her to play with cars and clean the dust bunnies under the bed with her trousers. However, she never learned anything from one of her grandfathers, who died before she was born. Ela tells readers that she doesn't miss him and can't imagine him, but she's glad he existed, for without him she wouldn't exist, either. This is a gentle way of introducing children to the idea that life and death are a natural continuum. A clever spread suggesting a family tree depicts Ela emerging from a flower, the result of the different branches coming together.
VERDICT A tender approach to the always difficult subject of death and family connections. Recommended for any library with a Spanish collection.
