Gr 3-8–This workbook, written by a child psychologist, attempts to provide support for siblings of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and their adult caretakers. The text focuses on behavior and family dynamics, offering information about what siblings of children with ADHD might be going through. Included worksheets aim to identify feelings and ways children can advocate for their own needs. The book concentrates on traditional family structures (mother, father, sister, brother), and there are parent-aimed sections meant to facilitate understanding of their role. However, some of the notes on how to manage the child using the worksheet could be off-putting. While the text tries to foster resilience and also acknowledges the feelings of siblings of children with ADHD, its tone at times gives off the impression that living with someone with ADHD is a burden, rather than a manageable challenge. The language is very binary; “sister” and “brother” are used instead of sibling. The publisher includes a disclaimer about the usage of they/them pronouns and explains the terms represent both the singular and plural. Worksheets are also downloadable, and the book includes an appendix with resources for parents.
VERDICT Though some families will find the tools mentioned here useful, overall this work misses the mark when it comes to inclusivity.
