K-Gr 2–On a boring afternoon, Errol wants to hear a story. His mom is too busy, though, and he has no idea how to start one himself. He looks around his garden, and an ant sparks the first idea, followed by other common and exotic creatures. Slowly his story forms, and with each additional animal, it becomes more complex. At first, the boy is a little intimidated by the task, and the expectations of his audience, but he pulls through, delivering a wild adventure. To delineate the story within the story, Taylor cleverly switches between picture book and comic book formats. The story is told in a way that feels authentic to a child’s way of thinking; essentially, all ideas are good ideas when creating. In an effort to further encourage children, the creators included a story chart in the back.
VERDICT The creative process is a knotty concept to portray, but this story does a good job demonstrating one aspect of it.
