Gr 3–6—This graphic novel is based on a short film of the same name, focused on a pig trying to keep a dark fog from engulfing his small town; this second installment finds Pig on a quest with his friends, seeking answers about the deadly fog and encountering new challenges. The most appealing element of this tale is its hazy sweetness as this loyal band of companions amble along toward an uncertain fate. The digital, watercolor-style art is organic and comfortable, a bit like a superb storyboard. Our view of Pig's plight remains incomplete, as this is the second of three volumes. Getting just a slice of the action may leave readers curious to go back and forward for the rest of the picture—though, since it's told in such a mellow tone (except for a couple of terrifying moments), kids might be satisfied with this one glimpse into Pig's world.
VERDICT For fantasy-loving older elementary and middle grade readers.
