Gr 9 Up–Bandmates Haden and Kizi are heading for a huge music festival when their car breaks down in the middle of nowhere, with no sign of help coming anytime soon. Fortunately, a top musician’s tour bus is nearby and offers them a ride. Unfortunately, that bus contains Haden’s rival Deacon Rex, as well as her ex, Cairo. Telling herself she’ll put up with anything to not miss a gig, they continue on. One wrong turn later, and all of them are marooned in a disgusting swampland where their only haven is an old, eerie house. As they uncover the secrets of previous visitors, this motley group wonders if they will ever escape. Ellis, known for her compelling stories integrating the mysterious and supernatural with diverse youthful casts, is masterful at building suspense. The tension remains strong throughout the novel. This page-turner has all the ingredients of a hit horror film.
VERDICT This amazingly cool and super scary book is recommended for teen readers.
