PreS-Gr 2—Chloe loves school and looks forward to going, but notices that something has changed this year. Some of the kids are not very nice. Rather than crying or feeling sorry for herself, Chloe moves on and looks for other classmates who will be friendly to her. After many trials, Chloe realizes that friendship is like fruit. (When you make a fruit salad, you want to choose the sweetest fruit possible, not the prettiest or the most popular.) After Chloe gains this awareness, her life is full. While the book has a strong and positive message, it feels more like a lesson than a story. The illustrations are attractive but have an old fashioned and dated look. A recipe and a guide to boosting friendship making skills are appended.
VERDICT A purposeful addition to larger picture book collections.
