K-Gr 2—Once students digest the rules in this silly picture book they will surely be ready for school. The book is composed of do's and don'ts on the verso, with bright cartoon illustrations detailing the scenario on the recto. Readers see a variety of animal students going through their day at school. While some of the advice is practical, "If you spill something, clean it up," other suggestions are confusing, such as, "It's good to get creative—just not with your school supplies." In this example, readers see a bunny building with crayons instead of coloring with them; young students might not understand why they can't be creative with their crayons in any way they want. Since there is no real plot, this book might not be asked for again and again.
VERDICT A fun secondary purchase to start a back-to-school conversation. Children will enjoy examining the lively and giggle-worthy cartoon art.
