The Hex Girls: A Rogue Thorn

Gr 8 Up–Sally McKnight, aka Thorn, lead singer of the Hex Girls, moves cross-country from Oakhaven, MA, to Coolsville, CA, with her dad and bandmates Luna and Dusk with their families. As she navigates a new school, Thorn wonders if a girl named Velma returns her crush. She is bullied by Jordan, a member of another band who sees the Hex Girls as a threat for the upcoming talent show. The Hex Girls begin drifting apart as Luna and Dusk face their own issues adapting to their new lives. Matters become worse with the appearance of a sentient mist monster calling out the Hex Girls as it kills crops around town and possibly poisons residents. After the death of a classmate, unmasking the mist monster takes on new urgency for Mystery Inc. The mist monster isn’t the only problem Coolsville is facing. The narrative reveals more about Fred, Daphne, Velma, and Shaggy and the town’s perception of the Mystery Inc crew. Romantic moments between Thorn and Velma do not move beyond kissing.
