PreS-Gr 1—Wally and his roommate Mae, a bear, are in for a surprise when his uncle comes for a visit and wants to work rather than rest. Uncle Rabbit busily transforms the house from stem to stern without asking, and, worse yet, Mae seems to love all of the modifications. Wally liked things just the way they were and finally stands up for himself and Uncle Rabbit decides to leave—until next visit. The soft-focus paintings are colorful and lively and bring the book to life. The only disappointment comes at the end of the story when Mae shares her sadness that Uncle Rabbit didn't get a chance to hang a picture of her and her five brothers. The illustration clearly shows five bears instead of six. Still, this is an interesting read that will keep readers engaged.—Robbie L. Flowers, Detroit Public Library, MI
