The Kid’s Guide to Camping

Gr 3-6–This guidebook explores various types of camping and ways that kids and their families might experience this pastime. Most of the information centers on camping in an RV; however, there is some mention of tent and backcountry camping. The text focuses on campground camping, mostly at Kampgrounds of America (KOA) properties, and oftentimes reads like an advertisement for these campgrounds. There are also assumptions made about the camping experience, such as making friends, visiting museums, and swimming in pools, which could disappoint young readers whose families opt for a more remote camping experience. Quotes from actual campers unfortunately fall flat as they are highly generic, but the bold graphics are visually appealing. There are some interesting tidbits focusing on different areas of the United States, but unless a reader is visiting the specific locale mentioned the information is not particularly relevant. The guidebook is also peppered with consumables which will make this a difficult addition to circulating collections.
