Gr 2-4–The Pincher family are no strangers to a fast-paced heist. In fact, they take pride in the experience. However, when the family encounters an Egyptian cat statue and unleashes its curse, their lives are turned upside down. Honest Theo, the misfit of his criminal family, is turning into a crook while others are turning from crime, jump-starting their race to reclaim the balance. Young readers will enjoy the playful plot of this pleasant read. Sparring weaves bits of comedy within the dialogue. Teachers and librarians would be wise to include this title in their collections, especially those with readers who love a good problem-solving mystery. The text is accompanied by abundant, charming artwork that captures the silliness and action. Readers are likely to find Theo particularly interesting. Although a part of the antagonistic Pinchers, Theo’s wholesome nature is different and as such he stands out even after the turn of events and their resolution. Young readers will surely enjoy the ease with which the story can be received and digested.
VERDICT A captivating and fun mystery for young fans of the genre.
