Gr 7 Up—This latest addition to the "Manga Classics" series adapts several of Poe's most famous creations into graphic novel format, including his poem The Raven and his stories, "The Masque of the Red Death," "The Cask of Amontillado," "The Tell-Tale Heart," and "The Fall of the House of Usher." The volume retains much of the original writing, and the design and manga-style illustrations will help readers understand the narratives and navigate Poe's language. Even those who are familiar with the classic horror author will welcome the visual depictions of confusing aspects, such as the bust of Pallas in The Raven or the walls that are "encrusted with nitre" in "The Cask of Amontillado." Though each entry is illustrated by a different artist, all are heavily stylized with chilling close-ups and plenty of shadows. The striking images will help old and new readers appreciate these tales on multiple levels.
VERDICT An excellent addition to graphic novel collections and a great way to introduce newcomers to some of Poe's most chilling works.
