Gr 9 Up–For generations, stories have been told of how the remote village of Reverie is forever spared from darkness. Long ago, the Sun descended to the village and fell in love with a mortal. Though bound to return to the sky, she could not leave without a gift. She bestowed upon her beloved the power to draw from her light, creating the first Starmaker. Ever since, an immortal Starmaker has watched over Reverie, ensuring its light never fades. Aurora grew up with this tale of magic but never imagined she would find herself a part of it. With power in her veins, Aurora must train with the Starmaker to continue to provide light to her home. Griffin (Bring Me Your Midnight) has created a high-stakes modern fairy tale full of whimsical magic. The characters are unique and compelling, although at times Aurora’s actions will not always make sense to readers. The relationship between the Starmaker and Aurora is powerful, as their connection turns from enmity to romance. There are some brief moments of mature romantic scenes that are best suited for older YA readers. Overall, fans of Griffin’s work will appreciate her latest fantastical creation. Characters cue white.
VERDICT Readers looking for a stand-alone fantasy will find themselves immersed in an imaginative fairy tale of magic and romance.
