Gr 5 Up–Riley Singh is a 12-year-old Indian American boy who likes to play Dungeon Brawl, a quest-driven role playing game, with his friends. During play, Riley and his friends make fun of the evil villain Lord Doomface, who decides to take revenge by pulling them into his world. Suddenly, the fantastical games turn deadly and very real, threatening Riley, his friends, and their return home, unless they can work together to defeat the wacky villain. Doomface turns Riley and his friends into their game characters, and their squad becomes the titular Thrash Force. Sophomoric humor drives this adventure story. This is a debut novel for Sidhu and has tween characters that are racially diverse.
VERDICT Fans of Dungeons & Dragons and the “Captain Underpants” series will enjoy this light, playful book.
