Tonight Is Krampus Night!

PreS-Gr 2–This cheerful, rhyming tale starring some of Western Europe’s folkloric figures will thrill readers. Felix, a young boy with brown hair and tan skin, is unable to sleep; it’s Krampus Night, the night the horned brute goes door to door, carrying naughty children away in the basket on his back. Krampus and some spooky friends—Yule Cat, Jacob Marley, Frau Perchta, and Mari Lwyd—all visit the town’s locals as Felix awaits judgment. Sullivan’s playful rhyme scheme pairs with Persico’s cheerful holiday lighting to take the scare out of the characters. Persico keeps soft, glowing lights to provide warmth, never letting readers think they—or Felix—are in danger. More mischievous than frightening, the monsters seem to be working in concert with Santa Claus, laying the groundwork as Santa prepares for his big night.
