Toddler-PreS–The book opens with a minimalistic red truck on a white background, and in the second-person address, immediately gives young readers ownership of the truck (“esta es tu camioneta. Es toda tuya”). The truck begins to change colors—red, blue, green, yellow—and back to red—offering options for what this truck could be, but for now, it remains red. Klassen’s illustrations are simple but effective with emotive eyes on anamorphic objects that convey subtle feelings. The text gently informs young readers what the truck can do without commanding, such as putting a chair and table in the bed of the truck, or maybe a dog and a horse. This story empowers readers to envision their own journey as far as they want, “te llevará tan lejos de aquí como quieras”—a simple but effective line telling readers they are in the driver’s seat. As the pages darken, the truck’s eyes begin to droop until they close, hopefully inspiring little ones to do the same. Izquierdo’s Spanish translation flows fluently for the target audience. Klassen’s distinct tone is clearly translated.
VERDICT A gentle book perfect for reading at bedtime, and for all board book collections.
