Gr 3–5—Benegas presents a selection of 29 poems written in Spanish and organized around an everyday subject: houses. The collection begins with a swallow that builds its nest on a mandarin tree and continues on to meditate on the relationship between houses and cats, doors, kitchens, the seasons, and more. Halfway through the volume, the poet turns to haiku to contemplate additional topics, such as vacation destinations and activities done at home like dancing and celebrating birthdays. Benegas utilizes personification and rhyme to great effect throughout, which will inspire older elementary schoolers to be creative with their own writing. Yáñez's dreamy illustrations use a muted color palette and will lure in readers.
VERDICT Schools that offer a unit in creative writing in Spanish will want this collection for their shelves.
