What Mommies Like

illus. by Stephanie Six. 32p. little bee. Apr. 2018. Tr $16.99. ISBN 9781499805284.
Toddler-PreS—This sweet story depicts Mommy Bear and her little cub as they spend a day together. As in What Daddies Like, each page proclaims something that mommies like, starting with "big hugs" at breakfast, continuing with a bike ride, a library visit, singing, drumming, and playing kazoo. Moms like reading, bath time, and cuddles. The soft watercolors lend a peaceful feeling to each scene and the facial expressions add humor. During a scene proclaiming "Mommies like listening," the child enthusiastically reads from a book about worms during a dinner of spaghetti, while the mother looks at her forkful of spaghetti with some distaste. The text perfectly matches the perception of a young child—what is enjoyable for them is fun for all. What is very clear is the love between parent and child, shown in both text and illustration, and in the mother's full engagement with her cub.
VERDICT A sweet story perfect for one-on-one sharing.
