Gr 7 Up–This is a book that everyone needs to read, especially those with the privilege of being white, middle- to upper-class, and those in homogenous communities. Khan-Cullors is one of the cofounders of the Black Lives Matter movement and this is her narrative of survival in a world that for the most part does not accept her. The audio version adds to the authenticity even more as she narrates her own words, bringing the listener into her world. The only way that society can attempt to teach our students and young people to appreciate differences is to share stories from people who they cannot identify with on a surface level. Khan-Cullors brings what seems so distant on the news into the listener’s mind through her blunt and honest truth telling.
VERDICT Add this audiobook along with the print book to every library collection, especially those with an audience that may resist reading or listening to stories that are different from their own.
