PreS-Gr 1–Grant shares traditional African proverbs through a young girl’s visit with her nana. The girl and her extended family are shown cooking together, enjoying an outdoor picnic, and storytelling around a fire. African proverbs are woven into the natural flow of text but are set apart in bold so that they can be easily identified. Moreno’s illustrations depict a happy and connected family in cheerful colors. Back matter includes a map showing the countries of origin for each proverb as well as a native language translation.
VERDICT This valuable picture book will help children learn about and understand traditional African wisdom and heritage.
