Gr 1–4—In this tale, Akuluk, a young girl from the Northwest Territories, is hoping to visit her cousin in Montreal, where there are amusement parks, but instead finds even more interesting adventures in the North with her Inuit grandparents in Nunavut, as she sees Arctic animals and finds the proper way to hunt for wild eggs. The story is overly long for a group read—it is better shared either in chunks or one-on-one. The stylized, animated cartoon-style paintings appear to be done in watercolor and capture the landscape nicely.
VERDICT This is quite long and will be problematic as a read-aloud. Still, it fills a void of materials about this culture and will be a welcome addition for most collections.
