Duck on a Bike/Un pato en bicicleta | SLJ DVD Review

redstarDuck on a Bike/Un pato en bicicleta. 8 min. Weston Woods. 2017. $59.95. ISBN 9781338187021. BL

PreS-Gr 3 –Duck is a fowl with a fervor for adventure. Can he ride a bike? A few wobbles and he’s on his way! The other animals on the farm all have their say. Their responses range from amazement to scorn to envy. Envy wins out, and when more bikes are available, the whole barnyard is soon pedaling. This silly, delightful tale, based on the picture book by David Shannon, is simply animated and enthusiastically narrated in both English and Spanish. The English narration is by Walter Mayes, who creates unique voices for each animal and rolls the story along neatly. The Spanish narration is a hoot and a half, with Jorge Reyes throwing himself enthusiastically into the role of storyteller, giving a lively rendition of each animal’s thoughts. Read-along options are available in both languages. Twangy background music and sound effects add to the charm. VERDICT This is a well-done presentation of a madcap story that will leave children and adults giggling.–Teresa Bateman, Brigadoon Elementary School, Federal Way, WA
