Each year
SLJTeen rotates the responsibility for reviews by teens to one of the
YA Galley Groups selected by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA). In 2014, the Young Adult Advisory Councils (YAAC) from Johnson County Library, Shawnee Mission, Kansas, will be taking over teen reviews. The Johnson County Library has played host to several Young Adult Advisory Councils for over ten years. The groups, which meet at three library locations as well as in three partnering school libraries, gather around a love of young adult books and the library. Open to anyone ages 12-18, YAAC is an informal book group (without assigned books, participants are encouraged to discuss whatever they are reading), and also a sounding board to help the library provide better service to teens through display ideas, promotions opportunities, and program planning. For the past three years, YAAC has enjoyed being a Teens’ Top Ten nominating group through YALSA— through this program, publishers provide galleys to teen readers in exchange for their reviews. This program has helped to teach teens about the publishing industry and prove that their opinions matter. Most recently a shining review was forwarded from publisher to author, who contacted our group to thank us for the glowing review. With over one hundred contributing reviewers, YAAC hopes to reach 1000 reviews in 2014!
