Attention end-of-the-year Best Books list watchers: The 2013 Goodreads Choice Awards winners have been announced, with Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor and Park, also an SLJ Best Book of 2013, taking first place in Goodreads’ Best Young Adult book category. Rowell’s highly acclaimed but controversial love story set in Nebraska earned 21,818 votes from Goodreads members, with Rowell’s novel Fangirl (both St. Martin’s Griffin) taking second in that category with 17,184 votes. Other kid lit winners in the crowd-sourced Choice Awards were Veronica Roth’s Allegiant (HarperCollins), the third title in Roth’s "Divergent" series, taking 36,157 votes for best Young Adult Fantasy. Cassandra Clare’s steampunk Clockwork Princess (S & S), from the author’s "Infernal Devices" series, came in second, and Richelle Mead’s The Indigo Spell (Penguin) was third, with 34,727 and 12,523 votes respectively. In the Best Middle Grade and Children’s selection, winner Rick Riordan’s House of Hades (Disney-Hyperion), the fourth installment in the "Heroes of Olympus" series, garnered 42,877 votes—over 30,000 more than the first runner-up, Neil Gaiman and Skottie Young’s Fortunately, the Milk (HarperCollins), with 12,860 votes. The Day the Crayons Quit (Philomel) by Drew Daywalt and Oliver Jeffers won for Best Picture Book, drawing 9,087 votes. Lemony Snicket and Jon Klassen’s The Dark (Little, Brown) came in a relatively close second at 8,466 votes. In the overall Graphic Novels and Comics category, Beautiful Creatures: The Manga (Yen Press), a graphic novel adaptation based on the best-selling series by YA authors Kami Garcia, Margaret Stohl, and Cassandra Jean, took first place with 12,209  votes. Goodreads members cast  1,953,770 votes overall for their favorite books in all categories. Participation was open to all Goodreads registered members and took place in three waves during the month of November. As described on the site’s Rules and Eligibility page, the first round of voting included 15 titles in each category and also invited write-in selections. The top five member write-ins were added to the second voting round, and the final round determined the top 10 books in each category.
