Gr 1-2–This colorful, multicultural Fourth of July story will be a welcome read-aloud for the holiday. In short rhyming stanzas that mostly scan well, Rudd describes the course of the evening as a large cast of characters experience the Fourth of July fireworks. VERDICT Most libraries will find this appealing, accessible book a welcome addition to holiday shelves.

Gr 10 Up–When an explosion rocks a Fourth of July celebration, six Muslim teens are accused of terrorism. All the teens, from various Los Angeles high schools, were attending the annual bonfire sponsored by the Muslim Student Association. Arrested and incarcerated, they experience harsh and unfair treatment because of their homelands and religion. VERDICT Highly recommended for high school students, this would make a great group reading discussion book.
