Antarctic Edge: 70° South. 72 min. Dist. by First Run Features. 2015. $24.95. UPC 720229916639. Gr 9 Up–This documentary follows oceanographer Oscar Schofield and a team of scientists from many disciplines on a three-month expedition to Antarctica. Their research vessel becomes an independent community in the remote, harsh wilderness as they study the myriad effects of global warming on the continent and its life-forms. Particular attention is given to the melting of sea ice, which is an important habitat for penguins. The men and women demonstrate the equipment they use to gain samples of krill (a benchmark of the food chain) at varying depths and even how they get biopsies of whales by means of a crossbow. The film is visually striking and contains moments of adventure and personal glimpses into the lives of the scientists, crew, and engineers, and it makes great use of computer animation to illustrate climate change concepts and the function of technology. Some mild language and the depictions of injuries (to scientists and animals) may concern especially sensitive viewers. VERDICT An educational adventure to one of Earth’s last untamed frontiers, this is a convincing testament to the scientists’ efforts to record the effects of environmental change in Antarctica.–Ryan Henry, Daviess County Public Library, Owensboro, KY We are currently offering this content for free.
