STEM Learning: 'MoMath' Every Month at NYC's Museum of Mathematics

On April 11, a card trick expert—featured last year in the New York Times—will perform for kids at NYC's Museum of Mathematics's 'Family Fridays.' Held monthly, Time Warner Cable 'Family Fridays' at the Museum of Mathematics invites children and families to join mathematical innovators from around the country to experience the fun and engaging aspects of math.
MoMathSpelman College math professor Colm Mulcahy—who was featured in the New York Times last July for his card tricks and the author of Mathematical Card Magic: Fifty-Two New Effects (AK Peters/CRC Press, 2013)—will be at the New York City Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) this Friday, April 11 at 6:30 p.m., to perform mathematical card tricks drawing from algebra, discrete mathematics, and probability. Mulcahy's appearance at the Museum of Mathematics is part of a recent partnership between the National Museum of Mathematics and Time Warner Cable called Family Fridays aimed at providing free mathematical opportunities to low-income families. Held monthly, Time Warner Cable Family Fridays at MoMath invites children and families to join mathematical innovators from around the country to experience the fun and engaging aspects of math. “Through Time Warner Cable’s signature Connect a Million Minds initiative we are proud to partner with The National Museum of Mathematics to make fun math programs available to so many kids in the area,” said John Quigley, Time Warner Cable's regional vice president of operations. “This is yet another way in which Connect a Million Minds is showing kids that science, technology, engineering, and math can be fun by introducing them to exciting, informal learning opportunities outside the classroom.” Family Fridays will take place every month at the MoMath. Next month, on a Friday, will feature a presentation from Yale professor Nathan Kaplan that will explore interesting strategies and investigate fascinating unsolved problems related to Tic Tac Toe. Stay tuned for more about Tic Tac Toe Friday. To learn more about Family Fridays visit familyfridays.momath.org.
