“The Classroom Bookshelf”
—a blog offering lesson plans dedicated to top children’s books—has joined the
School Library Journal (
SLJ) blog network. Now in its sixth year, “The Classroom Bookshelf” features a weekly post focusing on a select, recently published children’s book and includes a full review of the title, a related lesson plan, and other resources. The four Bookshelf bloggers—Mary Ann Cappiello, Erica Dawes, Katie Cunningham, and Grace Enriquez—are experts in children’s literature and literacy. Cappiello, Dawes, and Enriquez are professors at Lesley University’s School of Education, and Cunningham teaches at Manhattanville College.
“The Classroom Bookshelf” is live on
SLJ—the leading national publication serving the youth and school library market —alongside eight independent blogs in the
network, including “A Fuse #8 Production,” “100 Scope Notes,” and “Teen Librarian Toolbox.” With the latest post providing
summer resources, the Bookshelf offers users the site’s full archive of lesson plans, from nonfiction picture books and fantasy to poetry, chapter books, and historical fiction. A recent post about
Pax, for example, considers the book by Sara Pennypacker and illustrated by Jon Klassen, and provides teaching ideas for the classroom, such as an internal thinking craft study and “exploring empathy” for grades 4–8. "We are thrilled to join the
SLJ blog network given our shared belief in the power of high quality children's and young adult literature to transform classrooms and the lives of students,” says Cappiello. “After years of using
SLJ in our own teaching lives, we are honored to become a part of the ongoing dialogue about the role of books in the lives of young people.” Follow “The Classroom Bookshelf” on
